What is the Insurrection Act? Trump lawyers suggest President should sabotage handover

DONALD TRUMP’s reign over America will soon come to an end – but not before pro-Trump fanatics make bizarre claims the President should further attempt to block the handover of power to the Democrats.

There is a matter of days until Donald Trump leaves the White House following a disastrous single term in office. The American President has lost all remaining credibility following the attempted insurrection on the Capitol in Washington DC by his Far Right supporters, which he did little to quell. Now, pro-Trump lawyers are calling for the President to make a last-minute attempt to overthrow the handover of power to President-Elect Joe Biden.

The world watched in horror and disbelief as Far-Right extremists broke into the Capitol in planned violent protests on Wednesday, January 6.

Several people were killed, including a law enforcement officer and several civilians, one of whom was shot by an officer.

As Representatives and senators were holding a joint session of Congress on Wednesday afternoon, thousands of people swarmed the building and besieged the chamber in harrowing acts of violence.

Despite the terrifying disruption, lawmakers have continued the certification of President-Elect Joe Biden’s win in the November election.

It came after months of the President refusing to concede the election since the results were declared in favour of the Democrats back in November.

The President has now conceded the election but refused to admit that he actually lost, claiming the election was stolen from him.

His opponent Joe Biden is due to be inaugurated on January 20 after winning the November election.

As a result, the Democrats have charged forward with impeaching Donald Trump, accusing the President of “incitement of insurrection” and claims Mr Trump actively encouraged the violence which took place last week.

The article points to a number of false claims made by the outgoing President, including that the election was “stolen” and that he actually won.

If Trump is impeached for a second time, the Senate will hold a trial to decide whether or not to convict him of the political charge.

Some of the President’s more deranged supporters have been calling for the President to invoke the Insurrection Act.

Pro-Trump fanatics like Sidney Powell and Lin Wood, two prominent pro-Trump attorneys leading efforts to overturn the 2020 election, and even one North Carolina state lawmaker have come forward to say the President should invoke the Insurrection Act so he can stay in office.

Elsewhere, others such as Michael Flynn, Mr Trump’s first national security adviser who was recently pardoned for lying to the FBI, have made similar calls for Trump to impose martial law.
